It is set in an artificial world inspired by science fiction low budget movies, cult TV series, and Hollywood classics from the 70s and 80s. The consolidated visual metaphor of the cave is used in order to make the viewer transition between two realities. &nbsp; Once on the other side, we meet a fictional character, an old talking rock that lives in a cavern. The rock is musing on all the films seen and that have shaped its own memories. Its discourse is a paraphrase of an article by Robert Smithson published on Artforum, A Cinematic Atopia. Towards the Development of a Cinema Cavern. &nbsp; In the 1972 essay Smithson describes the cinematographic images hidden in our unconscious as “elsewhere”, a concept that is highly relevant if we bridged it to our contemporary time where cinematic mirages seem to become more and more present in our daily reality. The concept of “elsewhere” is suggested as an unspecified place buried in the cinematic memory of the viewer. By evoking “cinematographic elsewhere”, the video also pays a tribute to the special effects employed pre CGI, focusing on that handcrafted element of physical constructions – almost like a performance of the materials in front of the camera – always present in the movies of the time. <img width="850" height="478" width_o="850" height_o="478" investigates the complex relationship between language and cultural identity in our contemporary times. Instead of considering languages as simple communication tools, here they become viruses able to contaminate each other shaping new identities and geographies.The starting point of the video is a fragmented narration of an anecdotic story: an intimate adolescent memory of learning English. This memory is playfully filtered through references to the mainstream visual culture of the late 80s and 90s. The video work describes the process of shaping new forms of the self through the use of language. An assembled language, reconstructed from song titles and lyrics that are glued together in order to form a mnemonic collage. Lullaby is definitely one of my favourite English words. L-U-L-L-A-B-Y I am always happy whenever I can use the word lullaby in a discussion. Tristan de Cunha is the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world, 2,400 km from the nearest continental landmass. The first settlers on the island were sailors who came from Scotland, England, the Netherlands, the United States and Italy. Until today, the population has maintained the surnames of the founding fathers of the community. The language spoken on the island is the result of a complex crossbreeding of linguistic viruses from which the authenticity of the original English language has irremediably fallen ill. Apparently, my English embraces the most common grammatical errors that are part of the dialect spoken on the island. In some hidden nook of my discourse, various vague images of that land are evoked by my language. La casa (ostinato crescendo) captures a series of stereotypical architectures used in mainstream horror cinema: from the abandoned house, to the imposing Victorian house, to the dollhouse. In the video, the outside images of houses seen from the outside, deprived of their direct filmic reference, are forced to show themselves as variations of the same element and reveal identical signs while the filmic element works towards the construction of a psychological tension and its unveiling. Formed by sequences of day/night, the video interplays features major elements like the camera angle and position, the sound, and the evocative power of the setting. Here, the nightshift becomes a metaphor that tells about the mechanics of perception, describing a particular state of mind caused by working at night in relation to an self-generated filmic illusion in which one pretend that it is daytime. This work consists of a collection of images and resemblances that trick the eye, like the shadows of objects on a wall, CCTV footage or misleading deceptive reflections in windows. The camera can stand in front of them without being reflected and is able to observe the oxidized surface where no image can appear anymore. She is a singer who, being non-English speaking, cannot understand the meaning of the original words and through this process of transcribing, the song’s lyrics become a new or imagined language.A selection was made of the lyrics that refer to geographical locations The different places are only evoked through a bastardised English and as such only a stereotype remains; an unreachable reference point.
